A crown is a “cap” for an injured tooth. They are cemented on the old teeth or implant in order to protect the damaged tooth and/or improve its appearance, shape, and alignment. There are many different materials crowns can be made of. One option is porcelain or ceramic, which are beneficial because they can match the natural color of your teeth. Others are gold and metal alloys, which may be chosen for their strength on back teeth.
Crowns are usually recommended for:
- A large filling or cavity with very little tooth left
- Covering a dental implant
- Covering discolored, fractured, or misshapen tooth
- Protecting a tooth after root canal treatment
